Floral call to arms

We have been wild fans of Floral Army since their early days selling blooms in George Street park in East Fremantle. Each Saturday Annita and Alicia would unload buckets of blooms which the local community filled their homes with. Delightful chatter over the buckets coupled with the local blooms made the Saturday ritual of buying flowers an integral part of the George Street village.

From these gentle beginnings, the duo has gone from strength to strength – upgrading their park-side buckets to their instantly recognisable light-filled corner floral boutique, all while nurturing an impressive following for their covetable floral arrangements.

Ahead of Mother’s Day while collecting ‘WFH blooms’ on my Vespa, we gathered a few photos while chatting to the team about the best of local blooms and why mum really does know best.

FOR EVERY BUSINESS OWNER, THERE’S A HIGHLIGHT REEL OF ‘PINCH ME’ MOMENTS. WHAT ARE THE PARTS YOU’D PUT IN SLOW MOTION AND WHICH BITS WOULDN’T MAKE IT OFF THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR?

Our biggest highlight would have to be opening the doors to our storefront on beautiful George Street. We had started Floral Army producing weddings out of our home studios (garages!) and selling at markets for a year before opening the shop. We just had no idea that we would be embraced so warmly in the community when we opened the store.

Closing the doors for the last few weeks has gone against our whole ethos as florists. We are usually involved in helping to celebrate and commemorate life’s events in our community. We are missing the friendly chats and face-to-face interaction with our clients but are so happy that we can continue to trade and spread the love in a contactless way!

WE KNOW FLORAL ARMY IS WAVING THE FLAG FOR LOCALLY SOURCED FLOWERS RIGHT NOW! WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO LOCAL BLOOMS?

We are so lucky to have amazing growers here in Perth who are doing such a fabulous job at supplying us with beautiful fresh flowers during this crazy time. Stocks have the most beautiful fragrance and are a firm autumn/winter favourite, and tulips are such a classic and always lovely on their own in a vase. The advantage of sourcing only local blooms is that they last so well, mums love that.

FLOWERS ARE A GREAT WAY TO SPOIL A LOVED ONE FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. TOP SUGGESTIONS FOR SPREADING LOVE ON MOTHER’S DAY?

Our signature ‘just picked’ bouquet is a beautiful array of market-fresh locally grown blooms. If your mum has a favourite collection of vases, she likes to use, ‘house flowers’ is an option that allows her to arrange the blooms herself.

BEST ADVICE FROM MUM?

Always pack your bathers!

ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING FLOWERS LOOKING FRESHER FOR LONGER AT HOME (NOW WE’RE THERE 24/7)? WHAT CAN WE DO FOR OUR PLANTS WITH A LITTLE EXTRA TIME ON OUR HANDS?

Yes, cut the stems and change the water! We say this all day, every day! If you do this daily, the vase life will be lengthened dramatically. Trim about 2cm off the stem and when you change the water, scrub the vase with bleach to kill any bacteria.

Give your plants some extra love by re-potting, fertilising, wiping the leaves from dust and making sure they are in pots with adequate drainage. Moving them to a brighter spot in the house during winter will also keep them looking healthy through the colder months.
