After almost 700 days of Western Australia’s Covid-induced hard border with the entirety of Australia, and the rest of the world – the official dropping of the border and the welcoming of the very first travellers was a moment that called for celebration.

Detail was engaged by the Perth Airport to bring to life the official ‘Welcome Home’ event for the International Airport in March 2022. This was not only an important moment for the travellers but a moment for the wider community – loved ones, local and national media outlets alike.

At the forefront of the brief was elevating the moment that family members were reunited for the first time after years apart. We looked to the likes of ‘Love Actually’ for inspiration, to play on the arrival experience and the emotions travellers would experience as they touched down on home soil.

With this in mind, we developed an event that engaged all the senses and created the ultimate homecoming moment.

The activation included a large-scale WA native floral installation that greeted travellers as they made their way into the arrival hall, take-home posies of native blooms and posters for family members to gift their loved ones on arrival. A performance by the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra added atmosphere and stirred emotions amongst reunited families.

The roll-out of the event was hugely successful, with all major media outlets in attendance to capture the very first arrivals. The key event elements were broadcast across all key national and local media outlets in the following days, ensuring a high level of brand awareness and ongoing, positive sentiment towards Perth Airport and the eventual border opening.

Detail continues to work with the Perth Airport to deliver on campaigns, including the creative campaign for the recently launched Aspire Lounge – Perth’s very first pay-per-use international lounge.
