West Australian developer Saracen Properties purchased the Royal George Hotel in East Fremantle in 2017 with the vision of returning the heritage-listed Hotel to its former glory and reinstating it as a cornerstone of the local George Street community. The project offers Saracen a unique opportunity for the conservation, restoration and adaptive re-use of a significant heritage property.

Saracen’s approved proposal includes a faithful restoration of the existing building which will see the Royal George restored as the social heart of the historic George Street precinct. In keeping with its original use, the Hotel will house a unique hospitality experience spanning a restaurant, bar and cellar.

Combining old with new, a development of 23 boutique apartments will be housed in a contemporary zinc-clad building that links seamlessly with the original Royal George Hotel. The new building responds to the existing Hotel and draws on the character of the area, seeking to interpret rather than replicate what exists already. The development will also see the reinvigoration of surrounding public spaces and introduce new public artwork.

Multiple-award-winning architects Michael Patroni and Dimmity Walker of spaceagency have been engaged for the project, drawing on a wealth of knowledge and experience with other similar developments.

Detail are engaged to manage the press, social media channels, marketing and digital on an ongoing basis, as well as collaboratively develop a series of community engagement activations and events to engage with the local neighbourhood and potential purchasers.

This project is ongoing.
